THE SITE AND ITS CHALLENGES
The garden room was to be placed at the rear of the garden in a corner on an existing concrete base.
Our first job was to remove the existing shed which occupied the space and dispose of this safely. As the existing base was in very good condition, the client could save money by utilising this as their size available to work from.
Now that we had a building size to work with, we just had to do some simple repair work to small parts of the base and additional gentle landscaping to make sure the base would work for our building and the attached pergola and decking.
IDEAS AND CONCEPTS
We like to be adaptable so when we discovered the existing concrete base we already knew we could save our client some of the costs involved in creating their garden room. This allowed us to offer other solutions within their budget such as the connected decking and pergola.
After our site visit it was a simple matter to work designs up to the size available and go through options with the client. As they wanted a traditional look and feel we designed with that in mind throughout.
THE HUG SOLUTION
The design takes its lead from the existing 1920’s house, so echoes a simple and elegant theme. The garden retreat is clad in horizontal tongue and groove pine cladding. We painted the wood in a pale green so that it would blend seamlessly in to the garden. Not quite a hidden garden retreat, but certainly not a shouting look at me styled one either.
The windows were strategically placed on two sides along with a double glazed french door. All of these were vertical aligned to match each other and allow a generous amount of light into the main internal space.
A small decking area with a lovely pergola above creates an intimate outdoor living space to enjoy time with the family, alone with a book or an evening chatting with friends. Once the climbing roses make their way across it, it will be a flower filled canopy full of scents and a home to happy insects.
Overall, the traditional look and feel is designed to fit perfectly with the existing house and garden, just like it had been there for years.
A Garden Retreat for everyone
This a reasonably large garden retreat building with added decking and pergola to create both an inside and outside space. Blending the building into the existing garden was a key requirement and the soft and subtle paint colour along with a classic design allows this to happen seamlessly.
This family with a lot of friends and extended family from all over the world will be able to spend time together in elegance and comfort.

MY HUG
“We were delighted with our finished garden retreat from HUG. Everything was so easy, from our first meeting where we set out what we needed, to choosing the design. The guys making the building were so quick and thoughtful. We have had many parties already and everyone gravitates to our retreat. It’s an amazing addition to our garden.”
